| Stabbed to death!!! |
| 08.04.06 (3:14 pm) [edit] |
|
It is a case of a life brutally cut short when Mr C was stabbed in the neck after an argument with another guy.
His carotid artery was severed in the process, hence bled so much that he died minutes before arriving at the hospital.
The police investigating the case are now just driving off with his body.
I hope the killer will meet justice.

| I have HIV, but need a man! |
| 08.03.06 (3:53 pm) [edit] |
|
I have a lovely friend who called me yesterday, opening her heart to me.
She has HIV, since I have known her, she hasn't come down with symptoms. She has real needs of ordinary people. Despite keeping her status to herself, her concience has not allowed her to have sex with anyone, at least without a condom. She wants to settle down, marry and live normally. She needs a relationship an HIV positive healthy male.
If you are one, or happen to know one, pls let me know, you may leave your email, I'll contact you
Thanks

| HIV/AIDS |
| 08.02.06 (4:20 pm) [edit] |
|
There is certainly a sorrow in the land that weeping cannot symbolize.
In the private hospital where I work here in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, we see an average of 2 newly diagnosed HIV positive patients weekly, not to talk of the known ones on treatment.
The infection rates seems to be on increase, despite media campaigns about this deadly disease. It breaks my heart every time I look into the patient's faces and breaks the news, "you have HIV".
Unlike what is happening in other highly endemic countries, many nigerians do not get the grim reality of this disease. The patient who are positive do not often tell thier relatives or friends, and when they die, those ones are very eager to blame witches, wizard, voodoo or the devil.
Untill we talk openly about it, and not blame the victims for thier past lifestyles, things will get worse. I suspect there is a disaster waiting to happen concerning this disease in Nigeria.
A woman died yesterday of AIDS, after heart failure secondary to anemia. I felt helpless as the only surviving daughter wailed, her father died 2years ago of a "mysterious" disease and lost the younger brother last year.
The clock is ticking, lives are being lost, any end in sight?

| Shot by Police!!! |
| 05.06.06 (5:48 pm) [edit] |
|
I have been so busy with my senior colleague for the past five hours, attending to these two guys who were shot by some men of the Nigerian Police.
You think they are criminals? Heck No! They are law abiding citizens in public transport (a bus) that just passed a police check point.
It is so common these days for people to get killed because some public transport drivers refuse to bribe them with thier "toll fees" of 20 naira (13 US cents).
It is so pathetic that the people paid to protect the law-abiding citizens stars killing them instead. In most cases, justice is never done.

| Lost a friend, my boy! |
| 12.30.04 (12:06 am) [edit] |
|
I guess in my earlier entries in the year, I have talked about a boy who lost his mother sometimes in January this year to road traffic accident. He had since been largely in my custody, after spending several weeks unclaimed in the children's ward.
Iwas called two days ago to return him to the hospital. I had to travel hundred of KM to go and retrieve him from where he is spending holliday with my sister and her children. He had been so accepted in my family.
I got to the ward 1hr ago only to be told that he had been "adopted" by some faceless couple. Do you know how I feel? We have been so attached to each other, and I am hurt, annoyed, kind of betrayed.
Well, I guess I have done my best to put a smile on Iyanu's( as I call him) face, but I am not happy. I hope he will be happy whereever he is.

I am just having less than five weeks more to finish my medical internship. I have since been in the department of internal medicine. That is where I hope to specialize unless I change my mind. I travelled last weekend for family re-union & christmas. To us here in Africa, the family unit is very important. Hope you all are enjoying this season.

| Strike in NIgeria!!! |
| 10.13.04 (1:45 pm) [edit] |
By now you must have heard about general strike on oil prices in 'oil-rich' Nigeria(whatever that means) doctor are not one strike, but the nurses and other staffs are. So what happens to patients, we are forced to discharge many and refuse addmission for othes, and keep the ones we can cope with. Right now in plastic surgery where I am, we have one patient to one house officer, one registrar and one consultant. What an optimal medical care. Am sure those reading from the 1st world will even be envious of that. Well on friday we have a nose reconstruction for a guy whose nose was bitten off by an individual, funny isn'nt it? how did the nose get to the other character's nose? Will be in touch...

| House surgeon had a surgery!!! |
| 10.13.04 (1:28 pm) [edit] |
|
That was the gist last week. Last wedsday, I had surgery done to remove a swelling. Possibly a ganglion or dermoid cyst(lemme not bore you with the medical jargon). Histology is being done, then I'll tell you what it was. It has been on my finger for some time. Why am having the surgery now? Well ironically I must confess, the doc. hates to have his own skin cut.Moreso, my consultant hand surgeon, (Tola Akiode) advised for surgery. About Tola, I like her a great deal, she is so confident, so cool. I was given a week sick leave, but I had to return a day earlier 'cos I had been bored at home. My finger is better now, i will have sutures removed on friday.

| Plastic Surgery next |
| 09.29.04 (6:42 am) [edit] |
Come next monday, I'll be in the plastic and reconstructive unit if surgery. Do you know what we do most, not what you expect, not the beauty surgery, but mostly burns victim, severe tissue loss in road traffic accident(RTA), remember that Nigeria has the worst record of this. Anyway, I'll feed you up when I start in the unit. Comments are allways welcome!

| Obs & Gyn |
| 06.15.04 (5:53 am) [edit] |
sorry, I have been off the net for some time. It is because I have been quite busy in the past days. I have spent 5wks already in this posting (O&G). I must confess that life is much better without the so called tuttellage. I must confess, I do not particularly like this posting. I am more of an internist kind of. I am thinking of specializing in Infectious disease & Immunology. You know the disease that kills most, and that are curable and preventable are due to infections. Bubonic plague killed a quater of the population of Europe, malaria fever still kills one million mostly children per year, then the ever-present HIV pandemic, plus microbial terrorism. I will love to hear comments from my readers.

| Back in Obs and Gyn!!! |
| 05.14.04 (6:13 am) [edit] |
I have already spent almost a week in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, though when I was in school I was one of the best at it, but I must confesss I do not like it that much. So far, it hasn't been very pleasant. Every doctor there seems to be under tension of been bullied by one superior or the other. I have to be in the hospital from 7.30am - 9.30pm everyday(weekends inclusive) for the next 1 month! in between which I will take my calls. I hope it will get better. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.

| 04.22.04 (11:06 am) [edit] |
You will remember my earlier entry about the above named twins, they have finally paid thier bills. Thanks to doc.s, nurses, med. students, Churches and mosques. Too bad there was no foreign aid. Anyway, end result is the same, thanks anyway. My boy the"unknown patient" is still there, if I were to be married, I would have adopted him. He is in a pretty good shape. Anyone interested? :?:

My unit is changed today to Children emergency room. The other HO, my friend there way not feeling fine. I had to manage all alone with my reg. Quite a busy day. No mortality, thank God. You know I missed my colleages in the Neonatal ward where I came from: Jummy, she's a fine girl, not bad at all. Sade, my Senior registrar, a very pleasant woman, so easy to work with. Y'know she did a mini- send-forth for me, and Oyewole, my reg. I missed them all. Anyway, thats what happened today. See you.

I will be on call this weekend. Lost about 3 kids over the past 5days. They usually are already very bad before being brought to the hospital. I am enjoying my work, its about saving lives, and I have a passion for that. But I don't want to get too engrossed and forget othr things. I want to manage relationships you know thats important too. Don't forget the kids who need money(see earlier entries)
Take care

| Tale of two orphans. |
| 02.20.04 (4:08 am) [edit] |
The first is called "unknown patient" he survived an autocrash which claimed the lives of the parents. He sustaned no injury, and as such had beenkept in the childrens' ward. He is a very happy and playful child. The doc.s and nurses have given him all sort of thier personalized names. he's about 1yr old The second is a girl whose mother died after childbirth. Both of them had not been claimed by any of thier relatives. They have been surviving through the kind gesture and care of nurses and doctors. I gave out some money yesterday for nappy yesternight. Can someone give a helping hand please :?: :?: :!: :!: One a sadder note, we lost 'S' our AIDS pt who died of menningoencephalitis, the mother had been wonderful, she provided every basic thing needed for his treatment. I really feel for her. We all felt the loss because of the effort put into his treatment by the team.
